Smartphone 3D scanning with the eora 3D
At the time of writing, the Kickstarter Campaign for the eora 3D scanner has over half a million dollars pledged, of an $80,000 goal and there are still 2 days to go!
The response to this 3D scanner that uses your smartphone as 'the workhorse' has been phenomenal. The aim to make 3D scanning affordable has certainly worked, with the early-bird package of $199 selling out immediately.
The green laser is key to the high precision scanning capabilities, as Richard Boers, Co-Founder of eora 3D explains, “Most consumer 3D scanners use a red laser, but digital camera CMOS sensors (like our eyes) are twice as sensitive to the green spectrum as they are to red. This means you can scan in a variety of lighting conditions, even outdoors.”
The fact that green lasers cost roughly three times as much as red ones didn’t deter the developers of the eora 3D as they cleverly use the smartphone as the brains of the system to reduce costs.

As for us, we can’t wait to see how far the backers of the Kickstarter campaign will go. There is no question the funding will happen, and we look forward to seeing how the project founders deal with the demands of fulfilling the volume of orders placed and the future progress of this exciting little scanner.
Update 18th Nov 2015:
The final outcome, "2,139 backers pledged $599,925 to bring this project to life." Congratulations to the eora 3D team from all at Plunkett Associates!
