If I need a gloss/matt/textured finish, can this be done?
Textured finishes can be done either through the use of paint or through the application of a film that carries the pattern. (or if a simple fine spark finish is required sometimes by lightly blasting the surface) The latter is used to reproduce mould tool textures, typically in automotive applications.
Whilst paint may sound extremely limited when it comes to creating textures, in the right hands, the results can be stunning. Very fine finishes can be produced purely by spraying technique, courser finishes by using textured paint. Matt through high gloss can be achieved by careful paint selection, polishing and sometimes lacquering.
Paints used are usually acrylic (typically used in aerosol), 2 pack (where the paint and a hardener are mixed in controlled proportion), water based (the environmentally friendly way to go), or ‘good old’ cellulose (getting harder to source these days).
In all cases the results are determined by the quality of the substrate and the skill of the model maker, it is not worth skimping on either.
…. And as an afterthought, please allow a timescale to let a painted finish dry fully. Many a beautiful finish has been spoilt by packing and shipping too quickly after completion, it is just not worth it!!
